Fri 26th Mar 2021 - Propel Friday News Briefing

Story of the Day:

New vehicle Aspirational Brands to oversee rollout of multiple concepts, including Handmade Burger Co: Aspirational Brands, a new growth vehicle, has been formed to roll out a number of concepts across the UK, including Handmade Burger Co and Thai brand Lemongrass, Propel has learned. The new vehicle is led by Adam Howitt of Howitt Hospitality Consultants, who will take on the role of chief executive within Aspirational Brands, working alongside Recardo Patrick, who will be associate director of brands and acquisitions, together they will be backed by the owners of the 12-strong Lemongrass chain. Howitt is also one of the new owners of Handmade Burger Co, which was placed into administration last year, after a failed sales process for the then 18-strong business. Propel understands Aspirational Brands will open up to eight of the former Handmade sites across the UK, including restaurants in Sheffield’s Meadowhall, Solihull, Reading and Lincoln. At the same time, the business has already resurrected the brand as a delivery-only concept, which is available out of two Foodstars kitchens in London, with a further two soon to come online in the capital. The business has also secured three new openings for the 12-strong Lemongrass brand, including sites in Esher and Walton-on-Thames. The group also owns the Issa Sushi concept, which currently operates sites in Crawley and Worthing, with a third under offer. Aspirational Brands also hopes to launch a stone-baked pizza concept, with a first site earmarked to open in Bromley. The business hopes to have up to 35 sites trading across multiple brands and concepts by the end year, with plans to open a further ten to 15 sites in 2022.

Lord – government has refused to engage, legals now resume: Sacha Lord, night-time economy adviser for Greater Manchester, has said the government has refused to engage over the issue of why indoor hospitality cannot open on the same day as non-essential retail and, therefore, his legal action to force a judicial review will resume. Lord tweeted: “Last week, the government failed to introduce any new evidence. As a team, we agreed to mediate. After deliberating for a few days, they’ve now refused to engage. Legals now resume. Long shot, but we’ve won before. Hospitality should open in line with non-essential retail.” Earlier this month, Lord said he was to take High Court action to force a judicial review of the reopening roadmap after the government failed to provide any new evidence why indoor hospitality cannot open the same day as non-essential retail. Lord is demanding pubs and restaurants be allowed to have customers indoors from Monday, 12 April – the same date as non-essential shops reopen. Serial sector investor Hugh Osmond joined Lord in backing his legal action to force a judicial review of the roadmap. At the start of this month, it was revealed the government was forced to drop its “substantial meal” policy for hospitality following judgement in the separate legal case brought by Lord.

Next week ‘critical’ for survival of independent hospitality in Wales: The next week is critical for the survival of many independent restaurants, cafes and pubs across Wales, the Welsh Independent Restaurant Collective (WIRC) has warned. The financial support measures currently in place will expire on Wednesday (31 March), and with no word from Welsh government on further support after that date, businesses are facing an unknown period of continued closure due to a lack of clarity on reopening dates, the group said. “Thousands of small independent hospitality businesses are staring into the void with no answer as to when they can begin trading and no indication of if and when they might receive financial support to plug the gap,” said Simon Wright, independent restaurateur and WIRC co-founder. “Thanks in part to the upcoming Senedd elections, hospitality businesses in Wales are facing the prospect of no further financial assistance being announced until well into May; support that may not reach the bank accounts of beleaguered businesses until the end of that month.” If that prospect becomes a reality, the WIRC warned the impact on jobs would be “catastrophic”, undermining all previous efforts to keep independent hospitality businesses across Wales alive and ready to be part of the country’s economic recovery. Dan Warder, who runs Top Joes pizza restaurants in Narberth and Tenby, added: “The costs don’t go away when we aren’t trading. Government at all levels has made substantial efforts to help the sector during its forced closure, but the reality is that these can never match the losses being incurred.” WIRC was formed in June last year to give a voice to independent restaurants, cafes and pubs across Wales and has almost 400 supporting businesses across Wales.

Seedrs terminates planned £140m merger with Crowdcube, agrees new funding round: Seedrs has terminated its planned £140m merger with Crowdcube after the competition regulator provisionally blocked the deal – and has agreed a new funding round for the business. Seedrs stated: “Following on our message about the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) provisional findings on Wednesday (24 March), we have agreed to terminate our merger with Crowdcube. We fervently disagree with the CMA’s view but, given the low likelihood it will change its mind at this point, we have concluded it does not make sense to continue the battle.” The CMA said the tie-up would result in a substantial lessening of competition given the combined company would have at least 90% share of the crowdfunding market. Seedrs said it was “deeply disappointed” in the CMA’s decision and argued the merger would have a “highly positive outcome” for British small businesses. Executive chairman and co-founder Jeff Lynn said the company had agreed a new funding round but did not provide further details.

UKHospitality appoints new Scotland executive director: UKHospitality has appointed Leon Thompson as UKHospitality Scotland executive director. Thompson will take up the role on Tuesday, 4 May and succeeds Willie Macleod, who is retiring after almost ten years. Thompson joins UKHospitality from VisitScotland, where he has led the tourism agency’s policy agenda since 2013 and has helped build influential networks among ministers, MSPs, cabinet secretaries and key industry stakeholders. UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls said: “Leon brings many years’ worth of expertise and a huge amount of political acumen working with policy-makers in Scotland. He knows the sector inside out and has done brilliant work in positioning Scotland as a world-class tourist destination. I would also like to thank Willie for his years of dedication to an industry he first worked in as a teenager. Willie is much-loved in the hospitality community and brought a welcome sense of continuity during UKHospitality’s first few years. His hard work has ensured that valuable hospitality businesses in Scottish communities have had a voice at the highest levels of government.” Thompson said: “I am looking forward to fighting to ensure the governments in Holyrood and Westminster, and local authorities across Scotland, work with us to get the best out of our businesses.” Macleod added: “It has been a privilege and pleasure to champion Scotland’s fantastic hospitality sector for ten years during very challenging times – especially now as the industry is on the verge of reopening and recovering from the ravages of covid-19.”

It also reported adjusted Ebitda at £4.3m and adjusted pre-tax profit at £1.5m for the 52 weeks ended 29 March 2020. A statement explained the business remains closed due to the pandemic and “while the outlook remains uncertain”, it said the government’s roadmap to reopening offers some clarity, which has resulted in “strong demand and a high level of reservations”. Chief financial officer David King said: “2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for hospitality. The run-up to lockdown 1.0 and the subsequent closure of hospitality significantly impacted trading. However, with high demand for our alfresco terraces from 12 April and the further easing of restrictions on 17 May, we are looking forward to rebuilding the business.”
